Dr Andrew Wong, Director

BHB, MBChB, MPH, FAFPHM

Dr Wong is registered with the New Zealand Medical Council as a specialist Public Health Physician. He has extensive experience in the management of hospitals having held senior positions in both the public and private sector over the last 15 years, having worked in Asia and Australasia. For the last 10 years he has been the CEO of private hospital groups in both New Zealand and Australia. Services delivered by these hospital groups have covered medical and surgical services, day surgeries, rehabilitation and psychiatry.

Currently Dr Wong is the CEO of New Zealand’s largest private for profit hospital group MercyAscot. MercyAscot is pleased to not only be a provider of services to Medtral New Zealand and its patients but also a foundation shareholder in Medtral New Zealand. This association is not coincidental. When Medtral was conceiving its business model it clearly only wanted to work with world class hospitals that provided a comprehensive range of services. We believe MercyAscot is ideally placed to meet this need. So convinced were we that Medtral New Zealand would be a success that we have become a foundation shareholder.

Dr Wong is also the Vice President of the New Zealand Private Surgical Hospitals Association the peak industry body that represent all the private surgical hospitals in New Zealand. This is an elected position he has held for the last 3 years.

MercyAscot is currently developing the country’s first private comprehensive cancer center at its Mercy Hospital site. MercyAscot sees this as a natural extension to the services it currently delivers and a valuable addition to cancer treatment in New Zealand.
