Sustainability & Environment
Medtral’s care extends far beyond the hospitals and medical professionals it uses. We strive to operate as a socially responsible organization that cares deeply about environmental, social and cultural sustainability.
We are proud of our beautiful, clean, green environment in New Zealand and the quality of life it provides and have developed practices and policies to help keep it this way, while ensuring that our patient’s have the best possible medical travel experience at an affordable price.
Here is just a little of how we make this happen:
Environmental Sustainability
Medtral actively supports the Kauri 2000 project.
The Kauri is New Zealand's largest and most famous native tree, on account of its size and age. It is regarded worldwide as a truly noble tree. Kauri - podocarp - hardwood forests are among the most ancient in the world. Trees normally reach a height of 30m -- occasionally 60m -- with a normal trunk diameter of three metres, sometimes reaching seven metres.
Magnificent forests once dominated our environment, but sadly, after nearly two centuries of exploitation, only a handful of mature trees survive as lonely individuals or as small isolated stands, protected by the rugged hills.
Kauri 2000 evolved out of a project to mark the start of the new millennium with a goal to plant 2000 Kauri. To date the Trust has planted over 23,000 Kauri on the Coromandel Peninsula and continues to plant Kauri throughout the Coromandel.
For every patient coming to New Zealand, Medtral donates a Kauri seedling to the Kauri 2000 project in the name of the patient. You may return home, but your Kauri legacy will remain in New Zealand for centuries to come.
