Do you need a hip replacement?
Your doctor may consider recommending a hip replacement if you suffer from:
- pain that keeps you awake at night
- little or no relief from pain medications
- difficulty walking up or down stairs
- trouble standing from a seated position
- having to stop activities such as walking, because there is too much pain
What happens in a total hip replacement operation?
The two damaged and worn parts of the hip joint – the hip socket (acetabulum) and the ball (femoral head) are removed and replaced with artificial implants called prostheses, which fit together and function like a normal hip joint, helping to make the hip strong, stable and flexible again.
What are the risks of this operation?
There is a small general risk associated with receiving a general anesthetic, including heart and chest complications. Specific risks include:
Wound irritation - Your scar can be sensitive or have a surrounding area of numbness. This normally decreases over time and does not lead to any problems with your new joint.
Dislocation of the Hip - Dislocation is where the hip comes out of its socket, which most commonly occurs in the first few weeks following surgery. Having intensive post-operative physical therapy can reduce this risk. Dislocation is rare and may require further surgery in less than 1% of patients, but precaution needs to be taken with your new hip forever.
Wear of the Components - Wear of the components does occur, although not for many years after surgery. The most major long-term problem is one of loosening of the fixation of the components, resulting in a slow loss of bone around the hip. This is dependent on weight and activity as well as age. On average less than 5% of implants will require revision within 10 years. The majority will last more than 15 - 20 years.
Alteration in leg Length - An alteration of leg length may occur. It is important at the time of surgery that the hip is stable to prevent dislocation, and sometimes this may result in some lengthening of the leg. This is rare and if it occurs it is usually less than 1-2 cm.
Infection - Infection, although rare, (incidence of between 1 and 2 %), can be difficult to treat and sometimes results in removal of the implant. Antibiotics are given during and after the operation. Infection can be reduced by operating in a special laminar flow theater.
Blood clots - Blood clots in the leg can be a complication of any major surgery especially surgery involving long periods of time immobile. Such clots can form in the calf muscles and can travel to the lung (pulmonary embolism). These can occasionally be serious and even life threatening.
Other potential but rare complications include: failure to relieve pain, unsightly or thickened scar, pressure or bed sores, a limp due to muscle weakness, fractures (break) of the femur (thigh bone) or pelvis (hipbone) and damage to nerves or blood vessels.
