What is hip resurfacing surgery?

Hip resurfacing surgery is when the socket is replaced but the ball of the hip is covered with cast metal rather than replaced.

Why have hip resurfacing surgery?

Arthritis or inflammation of the hip joint causes the smooth cartilage surface of the joint to soften and, with time, sections of cartilage may be worn away completely, leaving the bones of the joint rubbing against each other. Without the normal gliding surface, your hip becomes painful, inflamed and difficult to move. As the cartilage breaks down further, the joint loses its shape, the bone underneath thickens and grows out at the sides, further reducing movement.

What are the advantages of hip resurfacing?

The resurfaced hip functions in a similar way to the natural hip joint, resulting in increased stability, flexibility and range of motion. The procedure is less invasive than traditional hip replacement and recovery time is usually quicker. You should be able to return to near normal activities after surgery, and even play high impact sports. A traditional hip replacement can be performed in the future if necessary.
