How is a TURP performed?

This operation is preformed under spinal or general anesthetic. An instrument called a retroscope is inserted through the urethra, and during the 60-90 minute operation the surgeon removes the prostate tissue, small pieces at a time. These pieces of tissue are washed into the bladder and are flushed out afterwards. An irrigation system (catheter) is set up to make sure those pieces of tissue and any small blood clots are flushed out of the bladder. This may be in place for a couple of days.

What can I expect afterwards?

You may find it a bit painful to urinate, as the urine flows over the surgical area. This gradually improves over the next few weeks. Light work can be resumed after a couple of weeks and more heavy manual labor resumed after 4-6 weeks (discuss this with your specialist). Sexual activity can also be resumed after 4-6 weeks.

What are the side effects of TURP?

TURP can cause excessive bleeding, though this is rare with modern surgical techniques. Frequent urge to urinate is common during the early recovery period, but is rare long term. Prolonged side effects of TURP may include:

• semen entering your bladder (retrograde ejaculation)
• erection problems
• painful urination
• recurring urinary tract infections
• bladder neck narrowing (stricture)
• blood in your urine (hematuria)
• need for re-treatment (uncommon) because the prostate gland grows larger again or because not enough of it is removed the first time.
