Why is a hysterectomy performed?
Your specialist may recommend you have a hysterectomy (removal of the womb or uterus) if you have:
Cancer of the uterus or cervix. A hysterectomy may be your best treatment option. Depending on the specific cancer you have and how advanced it is, your other options might include radiation or chemotherapy
Fibroids. Hysterectomy is the only certain, permanent solution for fibroids — benign (not life threatening) uterine tumors that cause persistent bleeding, anaemia, pelvic pain or bladder pressure.
Endometriosis. In endometriosis, the tissue lining the inside of your uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus on your ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other pelvic or abdominal organs. If the other non-surgical forms of treatment such as medication have failed, you may need surgery.
Uterine prolapse. Descent of the uterus into your vagina can happen when the supporting ligaments and tissues weaken. This can lead to urinary incontinence, pelvic pressure or difficulty with bowel movements.
Persistent vaginal bleeding. If you have heavy and irregular periods, or periods that last many days each month.
What are the risks of a hysterectomy?
As with all surgery, having a hysterectomy involves risks, including:
- a potential for blood loss during the surgery
- post-operative infection
- damage to other internal organs while the operation is being performed.
Rare long term complications that have been associated with total hysterectomy include:
- urinary incontinence later in life
- incomplete emptying of the bladder
- bowel dysfunction
