Orthopedic Implants
Joint replacements used by New Zealand orthopedic surgeons.
Cost Range (US$1000 - $8,000)
With major joint procedures a surgical implant is often required. The cost and nature of these implants vary depending on what they are needed for and for how long they need to be in service for. As a general rule implants that are cheaper last for less time.
Implants manufactured in the USA and Europe ( for example Stryker, Smith and Nephew, DePuy) are more expensive than those manufactured elsewhere but have proven quality records. These are the implants you would receive when having surgery in New Zealand.
A less expensive implant may not last as long as a more expensive implant although in the first few years of use there probably is little difference in their effectiveness. Less expensive implants may last 5 years after which time another operation to replace the implant would be required. However generally more expensive implants last considerably longer; up to 30 years. As the hip replacement operation can only be performed several times in ones life time then for younger patients it is often more appropriate for them to have an implant that lasts and hence more expensive. Whereas an older person may feel they do not need an implant that lasts so long.
Your surgeon will discuss with you and advise as to which specific implant is right for your condition, age and life style.
Remember to be wary of cheap implants; while in the short term they may save you money; in the longer term they will be much more expensive or mean that you require more complex surgery or that your complaint becomes unable to be corrected with surgery.
