  • hospital stay of 2-3 days in a single room
  • surgical implants and orthotics
  • all surgical procedures and expected medical costs
  • physical therapy (in-patient and out-patient)
  • aftercare in your hotel (nurse visits + physical therapy)
  • contingency insurance (to cover any serious adverse events).

Why have a shoulder joint replacement?

When the pain in your shoulder cannot be relieved by other methods such as drugs, splints, injections or physical therapy, and the pain is interfering with your quality of life, a joint replacement may be considered if you have:

  • osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease)
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • post-traumatic arthritis
  • rotator cuff tear arthropathy (a combination of severe arthritis and a massive non-reparable rotator cuff tendon tear)
  • avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis)
  • failed previous shoulder replacement surgery.

What are the alternatives to joint replacement?

Most people with arthritis of the shoulder or elbow joint will receive other treatments from either their family doctor (GP) or a rheumatologist before they see a surgeon for a joint replacement. Treatment may include:

  • painkillers such as paracetamol
  • anti-inflammatory drugs such as diclofenac
  • disease-modifying drugs may (if you have rheumatoid arthritis)
  • injections of steroid and other drugs into the joint can also be helpful in the early stages of joint pain
  • injections of local anaesthetic
  • physical therapy can often be of great benefit.

However, if these treatments do not relieve the pain, surgery may be required.

What are the risks of this operation?

As always, risks of surgery include risks of general anesthesia, which tend to be dependent on other medical issues you may have. Some specific risks of shoulder replacement surgery may include:

  • potential blood loss during the surgery
  • infection after having the surgery
  • dislocation/instability because of the ball-and-socket design of the implanted joint
  • loosening of the implant to the point where significant problems are occurring, when revision surgery may need to be performed.
  • damage to nerves or blood vessels - the nerves that send and receive messages to and from your hand and arm, as well as the blood vessels that provide circulation, sit very close to the shoulder joint.
