what is an abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure flattens and smooths the abdomen but is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise regime.
is an abdominoplasty right for me?
The best candidates for abdominoplasty are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a sagging or protruding stomach that won't respond to diet or exercise. Common reasons for this are major weight loss, pregnancy, aging, heredity,or previous surgery. Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight or plan to have future pregnancies should postpone the surgery. Depending on the scope and nature of the problem your surgeon may recommend a less complex procedure called a partial abdominoplasty (mini-tummy tuck), or alternatively abdominoplasty combined with liposuction may give better results. Your surgeon will be able to advise on the best type of procedure for you.
How is an abdominoplasty performed?
Surgical techniques can vary but usually a long incision will be made from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. An incision is made to free the navel from its surrounding tissue. The skin from the abdominal wall is then separated all the way up to your ribs and a large skin flap is lifted to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen. These muscles are tightened by pulling them close together and stitching them into their new position, providing a firmer abdominal wall and narrower waistline. The skin flap is then stretched down and the extra skin is removed. A new hole is cut for your navel which is then stitched in place. Lastly the incisions will be stitched and dressed and a temporary tube may be inserted to drain excess fluid from the surgical site for a few days.
what are the complications of abdominoplasty?
There is a small general risk associated with receiving a general anesthetic, including heart and chest complications. Specific complications may include thickened or unsightly scarring, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, delayed wound healing, nerve loss and suboptimal aesthetic results.
