why have a breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure which involves placing an implant behind the breasts to enhance their size and shape. It is indicated for people with small breasts, sagging breasts after pregnancy, uneven sized breasts, reconstruction after mastectomy or other breast surgery and as a part of gender reassignment surgery.

how is a breast augmentation performed?

Methods of inserting and positioning the implants differ from patient to patient. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola or in the armpit. The incisions are made in as inconspicuous places as possible. The breast tissue and skin is lifted to create a pocket, either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the chest wall muscle and the implants are centered beneath the nipples.

What are cohesive silicon implants?

Cohesive silicone gel breast implants are composed of a textured silicone elastomer shell and are filled with a viscous jelly solid form of silicone. As this is not a liquid or a thin gel it will not leak from the shell. Cohesive gel implants were created to avoid some of the problems associated with earlier silicone gel and saline breast implants, including folding, wrinkling, leaking, rupturing and the need for replacement while still maintaining a natural appearance.

what are the complications of breast augmentation?

There is a small general risk associated with receiving a general anesthetic, including heart and chest complications. Specific complications may include capsular contraction, thickened scars, post operative bleeding, infection and alteration in nipple sensation. Rare cases of joint pain, swelling, fever, fatigue, and breast pain have been reported after a breast augmentation in some women.
