why have a breast reduction?
Breast reduction surgery is designed to make large breasts smaller, lighter, symmetrical and more proportionate to the rest of the woman's body by removing excess breast tissue. As part of the procedure the darker skin around the nipple is usually reduced in size and relocated appropriately.
The procedure reduces the weight of heavy breasts which can cause a number of medical problems including, back and neck pain, reduction in physical activity, skin irritation and emotional discomfort and embarrassment.
how is a breast reduction performed?
There are various techniques for breast reduction, but most commonly the surgeon will make an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola, extends downward, and follows the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin is removed and the nipple and areola are moved into their new position. The remaining skin on each side of the breast is then pulled down and around the areola. In most cases, the nipples remain attached to their blood vessels and nerves.
Stitches are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downward, and along the lower crease of the breast.
what are the complications of breast reduction?
There is a small general risk associated with receiving a general anesthetic, including heart and chest complications. The procedure does leave permanent scars which are easily hidden under clothing or even a bathing suit, increased scarring can be a complication and is more common in smokers. There is a chance that the procedure could leave you with mismatched breasts or uneven nipples although every attempt is made to ensure that they are as even as possible. Breast feeding is usually possible after breast reduction surgery, however some people find that they have a reduced milk supply and may need to supplement their breast feeding with formula. Some people have reduced sensation or a permanent loss of feeling in their nipples. In rare cases the blood supply to the areola and nipple is lost, resulting in tissue death, in these cases the nipple can be rebuilt using skin grafts from elsewhere in the body.
