The Nursing Care
All nursing staff that treat overseas patients are registered nurses either trained in New Zealand or overseas trained in countries whose training is recognised by the Nursing Council Of New Zealand. All speak English as their first language.
Under New Zealand Nursing Council requirements it is mandatory for all staff to have attended 60 hours of education and to have completed 450 clinical hours over 3 years to hold a practicing certificate, therefore staff must attend ongoing education sessions. The hospital also has a strong team of Nurse Educators who support staff both in the clinical setting and in the classroom.
Due to the types of surgery the nurses manage on the ward and because they pride themselves on the care they provide for their patients, nurse to patient ratios are low with 1 registered nurse (RN) to 4 patients on morning and afternoon shifts and 1 nurse to 6 to 7 patients at night.
Many of the nursing staff have been working on the wards between 5 and 10 years and have a wealth of knowledge and experience in specialist nursing. They love what they do and have a great team spirit.
